Swallow-tailed Bee-eater
These colourful bee-eaters stand out against the dry backdrop of the kalahari. Look forward to your comments. Thanks!

Wow! I have always wanted to see one of these gorgeous birds. Was this a setup-type shot? If so, I would have chosen a smaller perch b/c the perch seems to be too big for the bird. If not, well, you get what you get. I would also try a portrait crop to balance the composition. All that being said, well captured and congrats on a beautifully detailed shot of an awesome bee-eater.

What a gorgeous bird! Very nice background as well. Agree the perch is a little overwhelming, but most of the time, they sit where they want and not where we want.

These are handsome birds and you got a sharp shot, well exposed. If it were me, I'd exclude some of the negative space on the left. Putting the eye at the 1/3 point needs something happening in the other half to balance it.

Nice one Richard. Good critique from Diane et al. Can you remind us what gear you use? Cheers, Ian.

Thanks so much for the comments everyone! Appreciate it as always!
Dianne, great advice, have made the change and prefer it with less to the left, thanks a lot!
Walter, it was not a set up, so had to settle with what I got unfortunately (but agree the perch could have been smaller)
Ian, I am using a 7d and 400 f2.8 canon lens.
Thanks again everyone and have an awesome weekend!

Hi Rich, love the light in this, and the colours look great. The finer detail shows up nicely, and I feel you have the sharpness spot on too. Killer smooth BG. I would maybe remove the OOF branch on the bottom of the frame. .
