Just returned home from a fantastic two week trip to Australia. It was my first time in Oz and it was a family vacation so I tried to get in as much photography in as I could in between the sights.
After a few days in Sydney we flew to Adelaide to meet my good friend and BPN member Ian McLachlan.
Ian and his beautiful wife Janet were fantastic and gracious hosts and they treated us to 4 great days in their area. The first spot we went to was an Island not far off the coast called Kangaroo Island. After exploring the islands sights and wildlife the first day, we got up early the next morning and Ian had a beautiful 65' boat chartered that he has used before to shoot Sea Eagles from. We cruised along the shoreline looking for Eagles along the cliffside with our binoculars, then once one was spotted, we threw out a frozen/thawed fish for the eagle. I couldn't believe it but the eagles would see the fish from was much as a half mile out and start heading our way.
It was a little tricky shooting from a rocking boat, especially with the eagle coming in fast and the boat moving trying to get in the right position as the eagle made its final stoop to catch the floating fish.
I got quite a few nice images but this one is one of my favorites as it shows off the nice wing details and the fish is in a pretty nice position too. It was shot pretty early in the morning, hence the nice soft warm light. The ones I got an hour later were great, but they didn't have this same look to them.
Thank you so much Ian for an awesome adventure down under!! My family and I had a awesome time with you guys!!
