We spent some family time on the South African West Coast over December, in a quaint little town called 'Dwarskersbos' (it literally means "sideways-candlebush"). The West Coast is characterised by miles and miles of beach, lobster diving and windy days. And fewer tourists than other coastal regions - which is the way I like my holidays: away from the throng! :D
I set up the tripod one night after sunset (down there the sun only sets properly after 8pm) and captured this shot.
FLTR: Jo (brother-in-law), Lizaan (my sis), my mom (she turns 60 in 2 weeks' time), my dad (don't think he expected the shutter to fire at this moment!), my lovely wife Nicole and myself on the right.
Processed as a 3-exposure HDR both in Details Enhancer and Tone Compressor algorithms, then blended back with the original exposure in Photoshop and masked in a darker sky at 40% opacity.
I think I'll print one on canvas for my mom's birthday so she can hang it in their house.
:D
Gorgeous image and beautiful family, Morkel! Look at that light! I'm glad you told me it was HDR - if I thought the light was that phenomenal all the time I'd be on the next plane and wouldn't be leaving a forwarding address.
A nicely designed image and a loverly family. Did you think about using flash on the folks and underexposing the ambient? It might have saved you a ton of time. :)

The trick is to use the real flash at about zero or even plus something and to underexpose the ambient. I think :)
