    Default Image acuity and focus

First post here. Thanks to Artie and Daniel for the warm welcome.

Short version - I only started shooting last fall but have been practicing intently. Shooting with a D500 and Sigma 500mm f4 primarily (as is the case with this image). I have some very good photos this year, but I would say that maybe 1/5 are in focus and relatively sharp, versus this photo in which you can see neither bird is sharp, however I cannot discern any focus points on either bird where I might have missed with my AF focus point (i.e. wingtip).

So I am asking for advice as to how a shot may end up like this and what I can change. This image is representative of many of the not-quite-sharp images I acquire. I do not necessarily see motion blur but I could be wrong.

PS - this image is only two frames in the burst PRIOR to a shot in which the pair are very nicely focused (they flew in front of a set of trees in the background and sharpness was acquired)
