    Default Common Tern

A couple of mornings ago we found ourselves on Nickerson Beach, NY with hundreds of Black Skimmers and many Common Terns, with their young in the protected dune grass areas. The parents were taking turns flying out to the breakers to catch fish to feed their young. They were flying back to shore just over our heads or skimming low over the beach in front or just behind us. This image of a Common Tern was taken just after it had reversed direction while gliding over the breakers searching for its next catch. The gray background is an impending storm off the coast. C&C welcome.
