Nice look at this youngster. I like the comp. Sharpest focus seems to be around the mantle; the eye looks pretty sharp and well detailed, with DOF falling off on the head. I like the sand on the bill. Out of curiosity, do you find that you can get consistently sharp images with the 500 + 1.7TC? I own a 1.7 but find that I rarely use it. Maybe I should give it another try.

Hi Bill,
Yes I get sharp Images from 1.7x TC II. I need to keep the following things in mind.
1.) Focus tune the combination. Initially when I photographed with out focus-tuning, images always looked soft. I found that it was due to front focusing and I had to add +10
2.) No subject Motion. I tried to photograph birds in flight (a bad idea for this combination). Subject motion always ruins it as this TC is not good at Auto focus (hunts a lot) for f/4 lenses
3.) Holding it really still on tripod. I try to tighten the rig and ensure that I hold this combination as still as possible.
I love the 1.7x TCII + 300mm f/4 combination as it gives 510mm f/6.7 handhold-able, light weight.
It also works very well with 70-200 f/4 lens as well
Hope the above helps.
Thanks
Krishna

Nice frame. Like the two toned background.
