This was a bit of a freak snowstorm that developed over here last week. The forecast was calling for 1-2 inches...but a few intense hours later we had much more than that! Talk about wreaking havoc on the autofocus as well - it was falling so heavily that many times the AF was simply hunting vigorously, trying to lock on the snow rather than the bird. Even focusing manually and then autofocusing caused the major hunting. I missed some great stuff. Fortunately it locked on enough times that I got enough other great images to process.
Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/800s., f/5.6, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, about 80% FF. The file was much more washed out than usual (but properly ETTR'd), therefore a bit more TLC in the contrast and saturation departments were needed.
Hi Dan, I love your image, snow was heavy indeed and yes it causes that AF doom! Very nice comp, the colors, and the eaten fruit. Also, great you escaped the big snow blobs on the bird. Very pretty, fine processing throughout.
Hi Daniel ... this is such a great photograph .
Love the dense snow fall , have you been lucky that no snow flake was in front of the subject ???
Nice pose and the feeding behavior captured is a cool bonus .
IQ is not as good as the grosbeak images ... IMHO.
I can feel the snow from here...looks heavy for sure. Lovely colours throughout the image with great detail on the bird...I like the pose, and the half eaten berries on the branch adds a nice touch..
