This bird is a winter visitor to the Indian Sub-continent.

Am not sure of the sub-species here; perhaps not pallidogularis but one of the other two.

I havent seen this species before. I like the layered colours down the neck. Comp wise, I would crop tighter, even creating a vertical.

    Default shutter speed and aperture

    1/125 @ f8

    ISO 400

If it lacks sharpness might have something to do with my using a monopod at that time!

I wondered about the composition here .. just off centre!?

It seems to me the focus is on the blue feathers of the chest. Was the dof narrow due to wide open aperture?

This is a very pretty bird. I like the pose. I would think of selecting the bird in a layer and then darkening the rest of the image.

    Hi Allan

Would not call f8 particularly wide ... seems to have worked well here in creating a slightly patchy BKG which I like!

I was thinking of an alternate reason - you mentioned monopod - why the focus isn't crisp on the entire bird. I was just guessing as you did not mention the ss and aperture.

    Hi Allan

Well, I have mentioned the SS and aperture ... the bird looks pretty sharp throughout to me ... look at the legs!

Very colourful fella, too bad the plumage is a little rough around the edges (worn). Good pose, and the perch looks alright too (although it is a bit bright). As to your comp question, yes I find it a tad centered. That long lower leg makes it difficult to crop at left and a well balanced way, therefore I would add some canvas back at right and bottom (if you have it). Thanks for sharing this beautiful species!!
