    Default Windows RAW Viewer?

I have downloaded Windows RAW Viewer each time I get a new camera and it has worked great in displaying my images in "My Pictures" and the standard file opening procedures. I just received a 40D and it seems that MS has not updated its viewer since 2005! That's a lot of cameras they are ignoring if this is true.

Yes, I can use Bridge as well as the Canon software to accomplish the task, but, darn, the convenience of using the standard Windows file system is nice.

Am I correct that there is no way to vies 40D RAW files in the standard Windows structure?

    Thanks.

    Hi Ed,

Good question, are you running Vista or XP. With Vista supposedly you can. A quick google says you need Canon 40D RAW Vista/XP-SP2* Codec 1.2

    Hope this helps.

The question is about RAW viewer so it has to be an XP question since Vista handles this completely different and RAW viewer is not applicable. MS has stated that they will not update RAW viewer for newer cameras as it is only applicable to an OS that they are phasing out.

This is one of the areas that Vista handles much better as it has native RAW support built in and all that is needed is the latest CODEC from the camera manufacturer - these are all downloadable from the camera manufacturers site.

If you download the Windows Imaging Component for Windows XP SP2 from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You should be able to use the latest Canon codec Robert O'Toole noted for displaying your files assuming Canon is up to date. The Canon codec appears to be here:

    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0026049.asp

    among other places ...
