I don't know what's with these birds. They are not fast fliers, yet getting a sharp head has been my nemesis. Maybe the neutral colors  go know...With the 7D (my nephew's) it has been the first time I have good results. To my tastes, it focuses better than the 1d3. I used the center cluster. It works like a charm in the sky, and in consistent BGs, bad if changing from sky to BG. I'll probably use the center point if there's a chance of bird dropping to busy BG from sky. I was using ISO 800 to test the ISO capabilities, and I was impressed. It leaves the 50D in the dust.

Beautiful Fabs, head detail is pretty good. I agree getting a sharp and detailed shot from these slow cruisers is difficult, they come out dark and soft most of the time!!! Although the best position is probably banking or a top view this one has good detail in under the wing areas and eye contact is excellent,

BTW, my observation of 7D AF is the same as you, very fast and easy against sky, gotta be very careful against busy/changing BG. I use center point only (as opposed to expansion or zone) and try to make sure the AF point never gets to see the BG! ISO performance much better than 50D, I shoot 800 pretty frequently too, nice results with careful processing :)

Fabs, Thanks for the assessment of the camera. It helps those of us deciding what to buy next:eek: Nice details in the wings and beautiful placement in the frame.

Funny that you should pick the TV to analyze 7D sharpness because I was just thinking the exact same thing about a TV image I shot with the 7D last week. It was the first time I ever got the head really sharp.

Sharpness and exposure look great. Did you use Viveza for lightening of the underwings?

A common yet a great species to photograph. It's very interesting to see how you were able to get very good details on the face, I too have had problems trying to get a decent shot of this guy.
