In reply to a recent post from me Alfred suggested I try the Pentax multi point metering.
In my last series of pictures I used this and do recommend it.
Here is an example of a Nankeen Night Heron in fairly tricky light.
Details: Pentax K10D & Tamron 70-300 @ 120mm.
AP.1/750 @ F4. Multi-segment.Minus 0.5EV. Around midday.Bright overcat sky.

Good use of the meter Ian and good compensation !!!! Can't ask much more than what you have done here You made the best possible from where you were standing Normally would like more room but not here Would be showing clutter Sharp and no shadows across the bird !!!!

Just been pointed out to me in a different forum that Multi-segment could be debatable choice with a bird like a white egret against dark background- possibly overblown whites.
Always so many choices with this digital game !!!
Will have to view it as a challenge. LOL.

You basically got three choices Spot is not practical for birds Then you have average and multi Out of those two the multi will give you a better average read Would be the best solution
Makes very little difference as long as your end result works The importance is to know how to compensate the reading
Alfred has it right. Exposure compensation using the multi-pattern metering is you best plan and learning what compensation works best for your camera.
