Photographed on Machias Island last week. These two birds were bonding after one got back to the island. It really was fun to watch them nibbling on each other and they obviously had a good time, too. :)

Another spot on EXP and a lovely capture of an intimate exchange. Love the composition but wish for a less steep angle.

Thanks, David! This was pretty much at eye level, the BG is the ocean.

Great stuff Axel! Love the interaction between the two love birds. What an exposure nightmare! What shooting mode were you in, and how did you decide on a proper exposure?

Thanks, Doug! I was hoping for clouds but like last year it was sunny. I'm not complaining though, it's been raining up there a lot this year. I used AV and adjusted the EC according to the histogram to get the whites right.

Excellent Exposure Axel, I love the intimacy here. The details in the feathers and the hint of yellow from inside the mouth are beautiful. Congrats.

Only you know how Axel. A fine line between controlling the whites, and yet, showing enough detail on those browns. Great work on both counts, and well timed to capture the tender moment.

    Hi Axel:

This is my favorite of your series so far b/c of the intimacy and dead on exposure. I remember this affection between the Auks well and can't wait to return in 2 wks.

Did you lighten the eyes? Did you crop and, if so, how much please? Would you suggest I bring a big lens? I was thinking of leaving the big lens behind and using the 100-400, but I love the way you have captured the intimacy with the big lens. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Marina! I did lighten the eyes some. This is not cropped much, most birds are between 10 and 50 feet away. I used a 300 and a 500 on a 1D3. With a xxD body you probably need a bit less focal length and the 100-400 might be long enough. Have fun up there!

Thank you, Axel, for othe information. I have two trips planned two days apart, just in case one is canceled due to bad weather...which happened to me once before. Marina

Good luck, the weather has been quite bad up there and they had to cancel several trips.

Very nice Axel, I like the interaction, exposure, detail, light and BG, but to be honest I like the first one better.
    Congratulations!

I could see where this could be thought of as a steep angle. The head angles of both birds are a little misleading. The shoulder of the rightmost bird is what identifies the real angle. Great exposure and I love the interaction. Clear view of both eyes is very nice.
