I just set up my mini mealworm feeding station for the common redstart on Friday of last week. I went over on Sunday to see how things were progressing to find the birds busy which provide plenty of photo oppotunities. I love these summer visitors and fortunate to have access to a place where they have bred for a number of years (a disused farm building on some prviate land) This is the male, a different bird from last year which had a floppy wing. Always a tricky exposure with the black head and that bright white cap.
Taken with 1Dmk3 and 500mm on a tripod from my pop-up hide. Taken at ISO 160 at 1/640s F7.10 and -0.67 EV.
Very nice job of the exposure on this bird. He's a bit like our American redstart. Great background and feather detail with a really nice catchlight. The perch is a nice one, thought a bit bright. Toning down the bare area in the foreground of the perch would be less distracting.
Perch mentioned. This would have been even better with the light directly behind you to prevent the shadow creeping in at left of the bird's body (which is especially dark on the black chin) , but I would take this in a snap :-)
Well done, Rich. Randy's perch suggestion was my only thought on viewing this. The light angle, while leaving some darkness under the chin reveals a lovely contour around the breast.
All I was thinking was already said, light angle (although detail and exposure are great IMO), to tone down the bright area of the perch is a good suggestion too.
Despite those things, I like this one VERY much, pose, colors, BG, etc. Congratulations!
Rich, super pose, and you have exposed the colours perfectly, especially around the head. Sharp, with good detail, and stands out nicely against the BG. Another vote for toning down the perch.
Beautifully taken photo. All positives as above. I would like to see the crop in either a 3:2 or 4:3 for this one. This would also automatically remove the issue of the bright perch. Somehow the square format does not do it for me here.
