Perfection would have been avoiding the slight shadow across the neck

Great pose and find. I like the fanned tail and details. I would apply some S/H to get more details in the shadows and would prefer a different crop. Maybe something like this:

    axel -
    thanks for suggestions
your recrop is close to what i did originally

in posting, assumed i'd be critiqued for too tight a crop and not enough room to side where bird is looking

just shows , a lot is subjective personal preferences

I like the fanned-tail pose and head position. The busy background is not ideal, especially the lower horizontal branch behind the tail. The shadow of a branch across the bird's lower neck is unfortunate, but perhaps the S/H adjustment will make it less noticable as well as opening up the shadowed areas on the belly and chin.

I do like the fanned tailed, but subjective personal preferences aside, this image has several serious flaws most pointed out by the lovely Ms. Robbins. In addition, the light from the left causes additional problems. "When working with primarily front lit subjects, always point your shadow at the bird," and "working in filtered light with some of the bird in direct sun and some in shadow is not a good formula for success" are two rules that can rarely be broken...
