Ok, so this may not be the 'sweet' light mentioned in the theme, but to me, it is all about the light and the effect created.

The gannets were flying below eye level on this day - probably something to do with the thermals, I'm not sure why - but as the sun dropped the shadow cast over the sea at this part of the cliff face meant to get a reasonable dorsal detail on the bird the sea would end up virtually black, so I just waited for a friendly subject to go beneath me and here we are!

    Hi Andreas,

Strange - I'm not seeing the artefacts in the browser here, but when I reopened it in PS it looked a mess. I've done a quick rough and ready redo of it, this one looks OK in PS, but I don't think. Ive done too much diferent

Mike, a really neat perspective and I quite love the well lit bird on the dark backing. Seems to be pretty nice details inherent to the subject and I do like your choice of composition - it's different.

But I am still seeing a ton of noise in the blacks... it's almost like ISO 24,000 or something. Not sure why but hopefully you can figure it out and restore the frame.

love the light, I am also seeing quite a bit of color noise on the dark wing tips, Id expect the dorsal details to be a lot richer given the light and such low ISO. Did you have to crop it significantly or perhaps it is the small posting size ?

Bit puzzled on the noise issue - exposed as far to the right as possible, a bit of canvas added to the left and the same amount taken from the right to balance, so in effect its full frame. I'm not seeing anything in Safari though, and only on a really crappy works monitor now so I'll take a proper look after work tonight

Hi Mike ... here on my machine , regardless which browser , PS or even PhotoMechanic .... the image does look not very nice , sorry to say .

Tons of luminance noise and ( as Arash said ) color noise in some other parts .... very strange !!!

Something went wrong in the process

    Cheers Andreas

Striking composition. RP better, but would be worth one more go to address the issues raised by Arash.

The gannet looks excellent against all that black water.
