Dan:
Perfect exposure on that often pesky bill! Good shooting angle, very interesting water, browns and blues go well together. Nice eye. Well sharpened .
Always fun to reprocess images with new tech!
Cheers

It's sharp!! The red on the bill is from all the fighting? At least, the European species is pretty aggresive. I'll presume you've worked on the blacks? I have been checking these blacks "in the wild". Even then parts of it seems solid black, almost without contrast. I'am always carefull with editing them. Like the typical colour of the water with the blue areas in it.

Thanks Jan, I did nothing to the blacks at all. The red tips on the bill are natural.

that's some pretty darn good processing Dan, no noise, no artifacts sharp with plenty of details in both whites and blacks. the beak detail is very good. no more yukky color casts
glad you saw the light

Nice view of this coot. Really like the ripply water on this one.

Thanks, Arash, your book is really well done, I thought your charts and numbers were
really easy to use, they seemed counterintuitive but work really well.
To all the folks here, I am not paid getting anything, but Capture One is so easy to use and is
just flat out better.
It does not replace PS, I just use it as my first go-to in the work flow.
Do all the real processing in minutes, (the Raw converter makes them look better before you move a slider).
and then just finish in PS.
Really, Free is a good price in a lockdown, 30 days to try it out.
Just my opinion.

Dan nice image the blacks and detail are supreme. I am somewhat confused as I know the white bill is hard to get with it wanting to be hot. My personnel opinion the bill is not white enough and the reds are way off. I understand trying to get the numbers down but at what cost?Last week Will had a Red grouse and Steve commented the brow was too hot and
made an adjustment. Yes he took the luminous down but it too was unnatural. Rather flat looking compared to what those grouse really look like especially when breeding.

Thanks, Kevin, not sure what you are referring to with the reds, the reds on the bill look fine to me as does the eye in sun.
The red water is a red brick building reflection, I should have mentioned that.
This was in Sun, I suppose the bill could be whiter, but I think the exposure is good,
the bill looks white to me, not blown. In the real world in the sun, the bill is bright to the eye.
It should not be to the camera.
I appreciate the critique.

Dan the eye is perfect. I was referring to the reds on the bill especially the knob on top just need to be more red.I know sometimes how hard it is to get the colors right. The blacks are perfect ,I don't know that I have seen better detail on a coot before. Dan I was wrong I went back and looked at some of my coot Pics and your reds are really close. I just thought they were more intense, sorry.

Hi Dan ... looks good to me . Nice colors , good tonal range .
Just for my sake of personal interest , why do you think C1 is making your processing better ? Another question would be for me , what kind of additional adjustments are you making in PS ?

Thanks Andreas,
C1P is just a better RAW converter. It is pretty simple, when the image pops up on the screen in auto mode,
it has less noise and better color.
I do all the adjustments in C1P, I bring the TIFF into PS to crop, use Topaz if needed (half the amount I use on PS processed files)
add a watermark and downsize for web.
Photoshop is just an expensive finishing software.
I wish I did not have to use it at all.

Thanks Dan ... then I would raise a question ?
All the things can be done inside C1 ... including Topaz .
If you use C1 in auto , then you are applying NR twice !! Just interested in your thinking .
I use my self C1 as well .. but it is not easy IMHO . Maybe if you use and trust auto .... but that way is not the best to get the most out of your files .

Andreas,
You may be right that all things can be done, but i have not figured that out yet.
By "auto", mean I use the "shot" WB setting mostly. I let C1P do the work.
I still do all manual adjustments, I am adjusting Luminance NR and sharpening to settings that Arash has recommended
in his ebook.
Not sure I even understand what you are saying?

Ok Dan ... not important .
I just think .... it is never good to trust blindly the " Auto " buttons or functions in software . As you do not know what is going on under the hood .
Likewise I think it is not good to follow BLINDLY .... suggestions , guides or recommendations by others , does not matter which source you use .
As all images are different ... might need different treatment .

Seriously Andreas,
Arash Hazeghi is a "blind" source for information?
It is good everyone has an opinion.....
I did not trust the "auto" function, I thought I explained that.
What is the point of critiquing if you do not want to accept or use
information given to you by others?
Just trying to understand your comments?

Dan .... this seems to be too complicated to understand correctly what I am talking about . Might be also due to language barrier ...
No problem Dan .... BTW I was not talking about a specific person or a specific source , as we all learn from different sources . My point was ... to not follow the sources BLINDLY !!! Nothing more , nothing less !!
Hope this clarifies things !!!

Hi Andreas, I am sure you mean good but some of your comments do come across as insulting to others. I think it might be a language issue.
Telling Dan he is following instructions blindly is insulting to him because he obviously made and processed a great looking photograph. His processing is perfect. He can see, think and understand so he is not following anything blindly. What you should have asked is why he thought these settings were the best to which he already replied. he tried them and he found them to be better
please be mindful of what you intend to say
best regards and stay safe

Hi Arash ... for sure it was not my goal to insult Dan or someone else .
It was just a global raised question/suggestion ... but I might have asked the " wrong " way .
My point is folks jump very often between software , and glorifying the new tool without getting the grips on that new tool .... and later jumping again to the old one they used or even another software . When you start with new software , normally one uses tutorials / guides and try to follow them . The problem for me is that the tutors are having their style to work with the software , like I have my style to work with DPP and C1 . One as a new user , tend to follow those tutors or suggestions without developing their own WF ..... that is what I would call following blindly .
I do not find anything negative with my wording in this context . Personally I read a lot and watch tutorials a lot from different resources .... even from beauty retouchers , might sound strange in the first place . I am open to new stuff ... more than anyone can think here .
When I give tips and tricks , which I think are good , I would ask people to try them but not to take the suggestion as the Bible and the best thing would be to understand what is behind that .... not following blindly .
Arash do not know if you remember , you might not , in the past I also purchased your DPP Guide , tried to see if it would improve my WF or the quality of my output files . Same with Digital Basics from Artie .... over the time we all should develop our own style and not copy somebody else .
So if anyone got this wrong , I hope my points are clearer and it was not a critique to a specific person or an image !!! Just sharing experience of myself
Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas I don't see how your points are relevant to the critique of this image. you can talk about this stuff, pros and cons of different flows in the digital workflow forum where it is more appropriate.
thanks

Using cop also for several months now. The images really look great even without editing yet. It was a very big step forward coming from the old Aperture. Some things can be more intuitive.
I've imported all my images inside the COP library. Opening the program is therefore a little bit slow, but for me that is not a problem.
I've got several external harddisks. Backing up my library is awkward. When I start a backup, it's not only adding these parts that are changed, but it decides to make a complete new backup. That's costing almost an hour every time!!!!! Do you know if I'am missing a more easy way?? Thanks.
