I had a fun time recently photographing this male Pileated Woodpecker working on a feeding hole just three feet off the ground. It allowed close approach and paid virtually no attention to me for some close-up opportunities, which is just as well as the setting was messy to the left and below what we see here (lots of tangled twigs). I did not see the tongue at the time of capture, just a nice surprise discovered while reviewing the images on the computer .
Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/8, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, small crop for comp, reduced the reds on the crest.
Nice intimate view of this guy. Very cool that we can see the tongue. The exposure and details look great. Well done

Lovely portrait Daniel!
Such a beautiful bird.
You found this one in a nice setting, the snow, the tree and the moss together are bang on. Exposure, details and comp is all very good. The tongue is a great addition as well as those pecking holes above the bird.
I might add a bit more contrast or a few points of blacks.
This is a wonderful tight portrait.
Your exposure on the whites, blacks and reds are perfect.
Good choice of comp.
IQ excellent. The tongue certainly adds to the image,
Gail
This is cracking! I am so envious as this is a species I've never photographed. The exposure is spot-on, and the red just blazes! Such a great close view.....
