This is the first time I have ever seen a hummingbird tongue do this... Has anyone else seen this or know about this behavior?

Know nothing about the tongue.. Angle a bit steep and the
perch (although nice looking rebar) could bee better,
the Hummingbird looks great, nice details and nice BG.

Agree with Dan's excellent assessment. If that's the tongue it looks broke. Beautiful details... TFS

Great assessment from Dan above. Agree re: perch and head angle. IQ looks very nice for ISO 6,400. TFS

I took 4 sequential images of this HB and it straightened and dropped the tongue 2 times. So that is unusual.

I can't help you with the tongue- sorry.
I love the detail on the jacobin. Just wish for a better (lower) shooting angle.
What is the perch? Dan says it is rebar but I am not sure

    Moe:

Agree with previous comments. Great looking bird. Very nice noise control for a D500. Nice use of fill flash.

Sure looks like spiffed up rebar to me.

You can slightly lessen the visual effect of the shooting angle by cropping up a bit from the bottom. It will reduce the impression somewhat of looking up at the bird. Doesn't change reality, just our perception.

Fantastic details on this little guy (although the eye seems a touch softer). I agree the steep angle is not ideal, but that is what you had here. Good BG. Sorry, I can't help you either about the tongue - first time I've heard of this! Odd behaviour indeed.

Nice colors and details, agree with Arash on the HA and perch.

Detail on the bird is great. Like how the soft light brang out the details nicely. Background is excellent. The tongue is pretty neat.
