This fellow is another test case for when to keep reflections. Because of the shooting angle, the reflection is very distorted, but, it still helps balance the image out. I sometimes will crop the reflection, but decided to keep this one for balance. Certainly appreciate your thoughts on the composition.
D500. 500mm f/4. Shot at f/4.5. ISO 220 1/800s. Sitting in my sled blind at the pond side.
Post: LRCC/PS2019. Small crop to level. Adjusted the blacks upward a bit.
Stunning. I agree that even the less than perfect reflection balances the comp. Colors are lovely. I might be tempted to try a low opacity brush to tone down the brighter areas in the BG.
Attitude, love it. I'd prefer some reflection, crop to bottom of wing as a suggestion. I like less water below and although this is charming, I'd much rather have a sharp reflection in general. The POV, BG, and muted BG colors really showcase this handsome guy, well done Randy.
Although I think the colours could be warmed up a touch and punched up some, I do feel that this is the best comp (perfect balance). Nice and sharp too. These guys are just showing up here now, looking forward to pointing my lens at them!
Daniel: I get the warmth issue. A few degrees warmer could work well. Sometimes I am just going for a mood, and will leave an image a little cooler, as the light often is very early or very late before direct sunlight hits the bird. I have spent too many years shooting loons in 1st morning light I guess!
Here is a slightly warmer version, which does look nice as well.
