Either more DoF or backing off and more DoF, as I feel you are too close and for something like this, I would like to see all of the lovely plumage detail.

Hi Steve, thank you for viewing and commenting. I hear you regarding your comments. I hear you regarding your comments. The image was difficult The bird was at the bottom of a set of concrete steps in the shadow on a ledge to the right. I was kneeling on the bottom step leaning over the water to frame the image. Probably should have passed it by but I saw a possibility. With the camera I have now I would have gone to F/8 and let the ISO rise. All hindsight now, thanks again for all your help is getting me on the right track.

Hi Joe, with the info and shooting position I assume there was no way of getting the whole subject in, so zooming in may have been a better choice and perhaps loosing the orange tips coming into view? You may have needed even more, trying using the Depth of Preview button, that may help you. certainly well worth stopping and shooting.
