A nasty job on a morning with freezing rain. The bird wasn't too pleased about it either! There are 4 eggs under her.

Beautiful bird, nicely shown. The raindrops on the bird really highlight the conditions you describe. The dedication to sacrifice to keep the eggs warm and dry. Nice image showing the bird and nest. Thank you for sharing.

This is a lovely image David, it leaves me wanting more canvas if you have it, everything is interesting here! The soaking wetness and droplets are an element that enhances the grebe. Amazing magenta colors on the bird which i have never seen before. Nice control of noise and did i say how much i like this?, its a winner!
David, I really like this, nice colors, BG and angle, wish there was a bit more room at the bottom though.

I like the view of the nest and the environment, wish the HA was a bit better. the blacks are blocked and have no detail (in the back of the head) and overall it's a bit contrasty. looks like the critical focus fell on the shoulder as opposed to the head

Would echo Arash's observations here David, but why such a very slow SS unless it was on a tripod and even then I would still feel you wanted a tad more SS. Push the ISO, it's better to have a slightly noise, but SHARP image, than a soft capture with zero noise, as you can deal with this very easily in PP.1/100 @ f 8 ISO 400
Hi David, tec bits dealt with,I do like the way you have got this image it cannot have been easy, wet drab bird and day very well caught.
Keith.
Lovely colors, great nest and bg, raindrops topping it off nicely. A handsome image in my book, above-noted techs notwithstanding. But I, also, would like just a bit more canvas.
Thanks everybody for the input and advice. I never expected to get good techs with this shot. The conditions were not good but I considered that the almost unique situation warranted recording this part of a birds life. I have done some work with the image. Added canvas, reduced contrast and worked on some sharpening. Comments on repost most welcome.
Hi David, the repost looks a bit unnatural to me, the blacks are blocked and show no detail and contrast is too high and the whites look grey. There might be a problem with your monitor that's perhaps not calibrated

Hi Arash. Thanks for reply. Monitor is calibrated. Whites probably reflecting weather conditions, dull, cold and grey. Have tried adjusting with white eye dropper in curves but the whites just get blown out. Poor image really but still worth recording.
Hi David, if you are using LR or PS then just look at the Histogram. The two 'triangles' in the top L & RH corners will easily indicate anything clipped, or just simply look at the sides of the axis. The RP clearly illustrates this, with very heaving blacks, so backing of on the Blacks, Contrast and or Clarity will help and reveal far more detail. The whites might be 'off white' but in the image here there may be some additional colour coming through which might need to be addressed.
You can set things to avoid this, but I feel this is where you might be going slightly astray and creating additional contrast as Arash suggested, but just my take.Have tried adjusting with white eye dropper in curves but the whites just get blown out.
the whites are blown and blacks are blocked because of too much contrast and poor RAW conversion in LR. if you want upload or email your RAW file and I will fix it. I think this image can be made to look much better
