Happy Hooded Merganser drake, from last month. Cloned out several of his fellow hoodies. This species eluded me for a number of years, but I finally managed a few moderately close frames of him including this one with open mouth and full crest.

My, what a lovely shot Bill. Beautiful detail and a terrific pose. Would have liked to see more detail in the whites, if possible. Nice capture.

Congrats on finally getting close to one. I like the pose, raised crest, leaning posture. Good job on the cloning out of other individuals. I do feel the image may need a touch of CW rotation.

Love the head back pose, Bill. He does seem quite happy. Like the detail throughout. Agree with a little CW rotation.

Lovely pose and great feather details. Like to see the open beak IT ads a lot.

Thank you all. Here's a version with some CW rotation. I'm curious to know what it is in the OP that makes it look like rotation is needed. Obviously, if the bird is swimming toward us at an angle, it's waterline will not be parallel to the frame even when the image is level. But I'll admit that can give the impression that some rotation is necessary, and impressions count. Was there something else in the OP that prompted that observation? In any event, the RP probably does look better. Just trying to educate myself, since this issue pops up frequently on BPN. Oh yes, I also tried to pull a little more detail out of the white hood, but there's not much there.

Yep, the repost does address the rotation. Both the lines in the water, and the fact the subject looked to be swimming downwards, made me sense that rotation was needed.

Yes, the lines in the water look more horizontal here. There are several approaches to pulling out detail in whites -- if you want to get into it, pop over to ETL. I'll be scarce for about 10 days -- in and out -- but it's a favorite subject of mine.

Lovely shot Bill the repost is spot on. the original looks as if he is swimming downbank a little bit, (the water line on the brown feathers).
