Old one I keep pulling out ,not sure about the backdrop which is the colours of a Scottish pine forest but that is how it was. Ideally would like the bird in front of the perch, it would be lovely if everything came right.

I think the background is lovely, and so is the bird. I might have cropped just a bit more from the top and shown a bit more of the perch at the bottom, which is a little too close to the edge. I don't know if I'm seeing a little motion blur in the crest? But it's nice to see the crest up, and the colorful eye.
A superb little shot Keith. The background is delicious and the bird sharp. If I take up photography again I think I will go to Scotland and try and spoil myself with these ....if that's possible.
Beautiful image Keith! I like the pose, raised crest, exposure and sweet BG. I don't mind that the bird is on the other side of the perch. If mine I would burn the bright part of the perch above the birds wing and crop up from the bottom to make the perch run through the frame.

Agree, on just burning back some of the brighter highlights on the branch, I would also consider cropping some off the foot of the image so the branch is just diagonal as per Bill/Jim's suggestion, looks better. Not a lover of the branch running through the body, but I do congratulate you on what looks to be a sharp eye, based on those techs. Yet again, another killer BKG.
Scotland dose provide some fantastic backdrops for both these and the Reds, always nice to get up there.
Thanks guys ,Bill you are right about the crest don't suppose 125 give you the speed for much movement. Jim and Steve tried different crop must admit personally I like to see the end of the perch, all a matter of taste.
Hi Keith a very fine capture of this little guy , love the pleasing BG that offsets the subject nicely .
I agree with the others regarding tones and crop , so RP does it for me .
Gorgeous bird! The burning on the perch has taken whites to gray -- I'd try to gain more detail there in raw conversion, even if it meant masking two slightly different treatments. I like the end of the perch, too, but wish it weren't so close to the edge. If not against your ethics, some added canvas there would be nice. The space on the right seems a bit out of balance with the weight on the left. I'd consider some crop there.
Keith, I like to see the bottom of the perch and agree that burning made the brightness worse IMO. Diane's repost has addressed that problem. I also like to have more room in front like the OP. BG is lovely.
