This is a shot from a bald eagle nest that I spend a lot of time photographing. This past season I started going to the nest 2-3 times per week beginning early February. I managed to capture them mating twice this year which was one of my main goals as I hadn't witnessed it the year previously.

This was shot handheld in available light with the Canon 7D2, Canon 300 f/2.8 IS II + 2xTCIII, 600mm, f/5.6, 1/1600, ISO 800

Fantastic frame Geoff. Great detail and interaction on the birds. the POV is spot on. and WHAT a perch. The snow with the conifers look really good. Maybe a wee bit more on top and bottom if you have it.
Great BG aswell which 'fits' with the scene

Very well done and thanks for sharing

This is quite an impressive and powerful image, and I just love the fact that they are in the nest and the included environment and snow!! It's nice that you don't have a huge angle here. It almost looks as though it's straight on. Love how the female's head is bowed. A LOT to like here!

    Geoff:

Strong impact, story well told and the environment is well captured. Agree about a bit more room, esp on top

Curious about the shooting setup here? As mentioned, your angle is pretty flat. Had you climbed a tree?

    Cheers

Thanks everyone for the comments. I shoot from above the nest on a hiking trail as the nest tree is 1/3 the way down a large embankment. The hiking trail is beside YXY (Whitehorse International Airport). These eagles used to nest just below where they do now along the Yukon River and had a webcam on their nest in 2013. Then they decided reality TV wasn't for them so they moved across the road and up the hill a bit for the last 2 years. They have produced 3 eaglets for the past 3 years and all 9 have successfully fledged.

I also wished for more room top and bottom but this is full frame on the top and bottom with a bit chopped off the right side to reposition them in the frame better.

Here are two shots showing the nest to show the scenario as I always get asked that question....

  10. Thanks William Dickson thanked for this post

    Geoff:

Great opportunity there! All of our local eagles like to pick trees with no hills around, so always a steep upward angle!

Cheers, and thanks for sharing the setup!

Great and (looks like) an easy spot too.
Wish our Aussie eagles would be this easy.
    Thanks for showing the location.
Of course, it does not take away from the image being fabulous.
