I saw this sparrow 45 minutes before dusk this evening at a brush pile next to the woods that I frequent daily. It chased a Song Sparrow off of the perch it landed on. My first hunches were possible immature White-crowned Sparrow, a Field Sparrow, or maybe a Clay-colored Sparrow. Whatever it is, it would be a FOY at that location.
Help with an ID confirmation would be most appreciated.
This looks like a Field Sparrow to me. The pink bill, gray face with brownish-rufous area behind the eye (as well as top of head), colour of the back's feathers all point to "Field" to me. A white eye ring is usually apparent...I have a feeling it is there but the face is highly lit by the sunlight which perhaps hides it.
