hello, is this tripod overkill for a 500mmf4 ,1,4 extender and 1d mark 4 camera ?? or is a 3542ls enough for this set up.

Bigger is better, BUT you've got to carry it. If you have to rely on a tripod, get the most solid piece that you can handle. Hand holding is preferred for most shots, if you can manage it.

It's overkill IMO. Go for the 3542; I use that with my 600 and it's more than stable enough.

I use the same tripod for my 600mm f4e and its perfect..............really not that heavy
