Wow this is a super shot John I really like the setting and the natural pose, ideally the head would have a slight turn but hey who really cares? My only criticism is the wing coverts and neck/shoulder area it looks soft/mushy.

Stunning image John. I love your shooting angle which gives such a great look at those big feet along with the color & texture on the ground.
Light/warmth is beautiful, your exposure appears spot on. Agree with Jon fully on the praise and the crits.

Amazing shot of a tough bird. Almost a magical quality to the light; the bird really pops, with almost a 3D look as noted above. Nicely done, John.

Egads! John. When I saw the thumbnail looking like an early realism oil painting, I couldn't click on it fast enough. The light and its direction, the mid stride pose with detail, the environment including the rough surfaced ice is brilliant. I prefer the IQ of OP.
    Extremely well done.

Knowing how secretive and shy these birds can be, this is a fantastic result. Yes, a slight head turn would have arguably been nicer, and technically using a D4 would give smoother tones, but I would be overjoyed to get a close up low POV shot like this

    Top work John

Beautiful warm light and colors, agree with Jonathan on the softness in areas.

Knows the feeling... Lovely image of a rail. They are so secretive birds, always in vegetation. To find on in the open is like winning the lottery. Was this at your pond?

Yes Joe- Not at my regular pool but one we made especially for Rails under a feeder.Water rails have this habit over here of congregating under feeders for other birds.. We built the small pool for birds bathing and the rails used it too. It then froze over and we had three birds there all the time. They would turn up like clockwork whenever we filled the feeders up ! The secret is to make a loud easily recognised noise every time you visit the site. They soon learn !

Excellent image in habitat. Fantastic 3D effect in the frame. Superb color pallet.
Great looking rail with beautiful colors and nice details. I like his stare too.

This is a species that I have been trying to photograph for a long time but never made it as well as this. Superb setting that shows a great deal of their natural habitat. Nice pose and light. I would wish for a little head turn

John, just to get him out in the open is significant. Well done on a clear photograph of this species with a pleasing background to boot. I really like it despite the softness mentioned. Overall an awesome image!

I've never heard of rails using bird feeders to their advantage before! Apart form the head angle, this is an excellent image. Love the unique rail on ice and great look at the large feet. Nice habitat too.

This is a beautiful shot John. Love the colors and the unusual environment ie. ice on the ground.
If the HA had been better this would really be a stunner.
Love the painterly feel to this.

    I will add my kudos....
You get a lot out of those "old" cameras.
There should not be any whining from the "I can't afford the latest gear" crowd.
    Nice work......

I can see why this one got so much interest. It's beautiful! The colors are what this is all about. Like someone mentioned, a bit better HA would have been over the top but as it is, it's pretty much there! One of your best in a while John. Oh, and I totally agree with Dan.

Thanks all Finally here's the last one with the white line bottom left removed, and I,ve tidied the bright reed stem up a little above the bird.
