    Default Snow Bunting Portrait.

While calling in a flock of Snow Buntings, this fella came real close...to about the MFD distance of 12 feet at 700mm that is. This image represents about 70% FF. I'm all for a clean bill but I love the sand grains showing that it was foraging on the beach. The Snow Bunting has just about the friendliest look to them, perhaps because of the gape pointing up over the eye giving the impression of a permanent "Mona Lisa" smile, and this image shows that nicely IMO .

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1600s., f/8, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, one black speck on the bill removed, darkened the pupil.

Stunning portrait. As you mention the sand on the beak gives it added interest.

    Lovely IQ

Amazing. Hard enough for me to get a Snow Bunting even at a distance. I'm sure I'll never see one this close. Very well captured. It's true that at this close range the DOF falls off rapidly, but the image works for me. I agree about the smile.

Hi Dan, the light looks nice and soft, and great detail around the eye and beak. Im glad you left the sand particles, and what a cool BG.

    Very nice Daniel.
I cannot imagine getting snow buntings to come in that close.
I find them so skittish here.
I wish the bird was more parallel to the sensor. That way the shoulder area would be better viewed,

Lots of great portraits this week and this one looks awesome. Wonderful colors of the Bunting against that beautiful blue BG. The details are fantastic and I too like the clear sand grains on the beak.
    Nice work
