    Default Duck ID

I see these ducks fairly often here (up the coast from San Francisco and inland a bit) and can't figure out what it is. Doesn't seem to be a good match to anything in my bird books. (Need better books, obviously!)

    Thanks!

Dianne, this is one of those domestic mallards (duckus Muttus). They come in all colours. Having said that it might be a leucistic mallard but I think its a mutt.

More than likely this is a hybrid Mallard/white domestic Duck, Diane. It's definitely not a pure species. A "Park Duck"! Nice shot though!

Leave it to me to go chasing after a mutt!! I guess this one is the same then? I didn't realize they interbred. I assume the "white duck" would be what I think of as a culinary duck. Sort of like a white turkey, but I hope not as stupid.

Strictly speaking none of these is a hybrid, mutts perhaps but only one species involved. Almost all domestic ducks are derived from Mallards (domestic Muscovy being the exception). Those depicted here are domestic versions (of Mallards).

Cool to know all this -- thanks, guys! There is so much variation in the appearance of some species, and so little (at least to our eyes) in others.
