    Default Farewell to summer

    The loon season is over now in Michigan, at least on one of the lakes I frequent. Both parents and juvi are gone. I suspect they have moved to a larger lake, perhaps even to Lake Michigan, in preparation for the long journey south. I will miss them.

    Handsome dude! I don't remember what you're using for processing, but I'm wondering, if you use LR / ACR, if a little more lightening with the Shadows slider would bring out a little more pop in the darks, and also enable the Highlights to be held down. Hard to know without trying, though.

    Lovely, Randy. Sharp, great detail and beautiful BG from your low angle. Loonie Too sounds like the perfect machine for this job.

    Diane;

    I use LR/CS6 for post. I did bring up the shadows modestly on the image. On my main monitor, a wide gamut NEC, the colors came up nicely on the neck. It is set to emulate sRGB for web use, but still shows a bit wider gamut than sRGB, so sometimes the colors of shadow areas are a bit subdued when posted to the web.

    Cheers

    ...and indeed it was a fine summer for you, Randy. Your loon images were great fun and this closer is beautiful. Whites and darks look just fine to me, and I love the compostion and the loon's placement in the frame.

    The loon doesn't look too happy that the summer is over either!! Lovely portrait full of details and nice colors.

    Perfect just As-Is, Randy! This is how they look... deep rich blacks, some iridescence, brilliant whites... not to mention "The EYE". Fantastic BG and position.

    (Mom and baby Loon are still here on this lake... appears Dad has "flown the coop". Hard to tell the dif between Mom and baby sometimes, with the Pre-molt going on.)

    Thanks everyone for the input, it is much appreciated. A few more loon images from this season might sneak onto the site at some point
