We saw this little guy briefly(!) during a recent visit to the Kruger National Park, RSA. He sat on the perch and pecked at the trunk of three for a few secs and flew off; we tried to locate him again with no success, thus the poor quality of the pics. Please assist with ID if possible.

I can't help you with a specific ID, but I can tell you that the picture at right looks an awful lot like a Red-breasted Nuthatch (or an Eurasian one for your side of the pond). Not aware that they are found I South Africa though. The photo at left shows what appears to be a curved bill which would rule out a nuthatch anyhow.
