    Default life-cycle stage?

I presume this is a juvie PB grebe, correct? I photographed 3 diff birds using audio for about 15 min. I thought I saw some sort of pecking order behavior between them... or something... very interesting! I will keep visiting the same spots. The lily pads are in full bloom now in Lake Washington...

Yes this is a juvie Pied-billed.

I assume this was early morning or evening light to get the warm golden tones. Nice and sharp with a great low angle.

Hi Enrique- What is the date of the image? I am asking because juvies tend to show the facial pattern as in the attached.

Date is very important as John stated. This bird could be an adult in winter plumage or a bird of the year moulted to winter plumage. My answer was based on the statement that the water Lillys were in full bloom suggesting late summer to me.

Looks like a late-hatch youngster to me! Still seems to be in that "awkward stage". Great shots.
