    Default Killdeer "Wave Breaker"

Photo of a Killdeer taken Wednesday, Oct. 31 2012, at Cherry Creek State Park in Colorado. The sun was behind me and to my extreme left. This photo is almost as-is out of camera, with a bit of rotation and cropping, and some slight exposure tweaks to recover highlights and soften shadows. I dodged the eye just a bit. Canon 7D w/ 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS @ 400mm, 1/1000s f/7.1 ISO 200.

Wonderful detail and IQ on the bird. I find the little circles in the BG to be a big distraction. Also would crop some off the bottom.

    Jon:

Good shooting angle and comments from Joe. Might try toning down the highlights with a very light setting on the burn tool (highlights).

    Cheers

I like the details and the low angle. might clean up the sand. having the sun behind you and having the KD's head square to the back of the camera or slightly angled towards the viewer would improve this image.

Nice IQ and pose. even though the sun was to the left, the way the light is hitting the face is nice. Good exposure. not blowign the whites was critical here. Well done.

Jon - I think it's a fine image - sharp and given the lighting conditions well exposed. I don't see any clipped highlights on the bird or even the out of focus areas of the wave. As far as the beach clutter, maybe the thing right in the foreground could be cloned out -- if you go in for that sort of thing....and that reddish twig in the bird's shadow?

A great low perspective Jon and subject sharp & well exposed. You did well in your PP considering the side-lighting here.

Head angle is fine for me, I would prefer to see a cleaner beach, which is not so difficult to do in PS! :) and would tone down the white blobs on bg.

Thank you everyone for the kind comments. I apologize for my late responses...I've had some rough weeks at work and some other issues that have consumed my time.

I totally agree about the clutter on the beach...I'll clean up in a re-post. I've tried to find a different frame that had a good pose, without the OOF circles from the wave in the BG. I am not sure I like any of them as much as this shot, though...and I'm not sure what to do about the brighter OOF highlight circles in the BG. I'll see what I can do about them with more highlight recovery and maybe some burning (as per Randy's suggestion) before a

Again, thanks for all the feedback!
