Default Lens recommendation- pl guide me

    Hi everyone,
i had posted earlier regarding choice of super teles and thanks to your advice I ordered a 500 f/4 II lens. I also have a 70-200 f/4 IS & 100-400 L for my 7D. My question is should I trade off my two lenses and get a 70-300 L or a 70-200 2.8 II ? I do wildlife & birds. Or do I stick to my existing set up.
    regards
    Sanjeev

Are you having problems with your 70-200 f/4L IS? I have my 500mm mounted on my 5D MkIII and my 70-200/f4 on my 7D. I move my 1.4X TC back and forth, depending on my shooting needs.

The 7D used to be my main body, but the quicker, more precise and more flexible AF of the 5D MkIII has put it in the back seat as my back up camera. I'd suggest that you think about upgrading your body, to either a 5D3, 1D4 or 1D X to take advantage of your new series II super tele. You keeper rate with any of those bodies will be orders of excellence higher than with your 7D, sorry to say.

    Sanjeev,

Do you use two bodies? I like to have a 500 with extender on one body and a shorter zoom lens on a second body if possible. I think the versatility of the 100-400 is great myself. Some people seem to love the 70-300. I haven't tried it myself. I'm happy with the 100-400.

Thanks David & Doug. I do have two bodies, both 7D. David, I do intend to swap one of them for a 5 D3 in the near future. I do not have a problem with the 70-200 f/4 IS or my 100-400 for:that matter. i was only wonderingi if I could reduce my number of lenses and go for any of the ones I mentioned to cover that range. with me getting the super tele, will the 100-400 get as much use ?
    thanks

    Sanjay,

The 5D3 can focus F8 real well with a non-reporting extender right now and in the Spring it will work with all. You could use the 100-400 w 1.4 extender on it and have the 7D with the 500 on it. The 5D3 could work real well with birds in flight even with the extender on.

The 100-400 really shine with mammals because of it versatility.

I've got a pro friend that carries a 600mm and a 100-400mm. Personally, I prefer the 70-200mm, with and without the 1.4X TC. Once you have the 500mm, I doubt that you'll be shooting your 100-400mm very much. Have you got the 1.4x TC III yet. If not, you'll surely use it on both your 500mm and whatever other lens that you decide to go with.

When the 5D3 gets AF to f/8, the Series III 2X TC will be another tool you'll need, after you get the 5D3. Anyway, with the Series II lenses you really want the Series III TC to optimize AF function.

I do have a 1.4 X TCIII and I like it on the 70-200 f/4 IS. I tried it with the 100-400 and it only auto focuses on a 7D in live view mode. I will go for the 5D3 and keep a 7 D as the second body. I have read that the 70-200 f/4 IS is sharper than 70-300 L, and I like the internal zooming and fixed aperture. Do you ever need a f/2.8 aperture for wildlife n birds?

    Sanjeev,
Note, the 5D3 has 6.25 micron pixel pitch and the 7D has 4.3 micron pitch. That means that the 7D gets 6.25/4.3 = 1.45 times more pixels on subject with the same focal length lens. That is like having a built in 1.4x TC with the 7D over the 5D3.

I also have a 500 f/4, 70-200 f/4, 100-400 and a 300 f2.8 (plus shorter lenses). The 100-400 very very very rarely gets used, and in fact I have never taken it on an air or car trip after getting the longer lenses. I also do not carry the 300 and 500 on the same trip; I'll choose one or the other, but the 70-200 always goes with one of them. I wouldn't want the 70-200 f/2.8 as it would add too much bulk and weight. (But if I didn't have the longer lenses I would really like the 70-200 f/2.8.)

Thanks Roger. I agree with you and have read a lot on your website "Clarkvison". That is the reason I want to keep one of my 7D's & only trade in one of the two I have. My feeling was if I sell my 100-400 and 70-200 f/4 IS, I can go for the 70-200 f/2.8II with TCs. Since I am getting the 500 II, I can't afford a 300 2.8II, atleast not very soon! As David and you have said, the 100-400 may not get much use. It is a very versatile lens and I have liked using it so far.
    Regards
    Sanjeev
