Avian Well wishes for Robert Amoruso

    From Robert's wife Cynthia:
Robert was at Artie's talk in Orlando Thursday. Robert helped Artie set up, stayed for the program & on the way out fell & broke his left elbow. A bird photographer with a broken wing is not a happy guy.

Robert, speedy recovery and wishing you well!

Hi all, thanks for the well wishes as I do appreciate them. Laying low while I get better as typing is a real chore but here is the lowdown on what happened.

    Thanks Denise for posting this.

Sept 20th - Orange Audubon Meeting (I am on the Board of Directors of my local Audubon Society) where Artie gave a presentation.

Upon exiting Thursday’s meeting I fell in the parking lot of Leu Gardens. The parking lot was recently paved. My fall was caused by lack of attention the paving company paid at a storm drain that I had the misfortune of parking near. The new pavement was allowed to end right at the storm drain w/o being leveled down. This has caused a large drop-off at the mouth of the storm drain.

Combine this with the poor lighting in the lot and I could not see where my foot was going. So as I crossed in front of my car, I stepped into this drop-off and fell.

Many hours later at the hospital, I found out I had broken my left arm and bruised my right side ribs badly. I also injured my knee. I am in a splint and on Oxycontin. I am going to an orthopedic surgeon on the 28th.

The doc in the ER felt it was a clean break, a hairline and did not feel surgery would be needed. Let’s hope for the best outcome.

Sept 28th - Visit to Orthopedic surgeon

I get out of the splint - oh joy that is a relief. Soon the surgeon comes in and goes over the diagnosis and it is a good one.

Break is a hairline in the radial bone (below for what this is) and not a fracture. No cast or surgery is needed - really great news. This heels on its own. Bad news is I have extensive muscular damage in the arm. Does not need any special treatment to heal and I should be back to normal range of motion 6 weeks or so after the initial injury. But it does mean that at least for a while typing is a painful affair and no heavy lighting with the left arm.

The radius or radial bone is one of the two large bones of the forearm, the other being the ulna. It extends from the lateral side of the elbow to the thumb side of the wrist and runs parallel to the ulna, which exceeds it in length and size.

    Oct 2nd - Today

I am not taking Oxycontin and switched to Ibuprofen.

Also at issue are the bruised ribs. Combined with the arm has made sleeping difficult though last night was the first nite I got a somewhat decent amount of sleep. I have better range of motion with my left arm though I still cannot hold a lens up. Yes, tripod shooting is doable.

Looks like I will be OK.

I am glad that you are on the mend & that the injuries are less serious than originally thought.

Hi Robert, in this instance based on your reply, an accompanying image is not required for this thread.

With rest & taking it easy I am sure things will mend quickly. Look forward to your return as and when, a speedy recovery and thanks for the update.

Robert - glad you are feeling a little better and that the prognosis is for a full recovery without any surgical intervention.

Robert, I was shocked to just learn this esp since we saw each other the night this accident happened. I am glad to hear you are on the mend. Hope you'll be back in the swing of things as the photography starts getting back in full swing.
