Importing Equipment to SA

Does anybody have any experience of importing equipment from outside SA.

I am particularly interested in the level of customs duty, that may be charged.

Whenever i've bought stuff the only extra cost was the dhl fees + VAT on the declared amount

as far as I could gather, Ken (did some research last week as I also want to bring stuff in sometimes) it works like this:

lenses - you only pay 14% VAT upon clearing customs
cameras and accessories - you pay the 14% VAT plus a 7% customs levy (thus 21%)

Thanks for your responses, I can confirm that this is correct, as I have just paid 14% on my import of a new 70-200mm, ordered from New Zealand (cheapest I could find) and shipped from Singapore:2
