Default Piping Plover fledgling wing stretch

    Attached Images Attached Images

I spent a lot of time with this piping plover family and was hoping for a good wingstretch!
Finally got a good head angle with feet visible.
Taken on a clear day with light haze.
    Canon 1 DX 600 mm and 1.4x
    Handheld while on my belly
    ISO 640 SS 1/2500 and F 7.1
Cropped from horizontal and is full frame vertically. I do not have any room top or bottom.
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail
PS I left the catchlight as is but could clean it up. I am in a no cloning mood these days!

I love every feather of this one. The glob of mud behind the feet should go away. BTW, I rarely if ever use the Clone Stamp Tool. Seriously.

    A very nice image Gail
It was definitely worth the dirt laying low as it ads to the intimacy of the image.
The exposure is fine and the wing stretch amazing for such a small bird.
Could have done without the small pebbles in the water, but nothing you could do to avoid them.

    Regards Steen

    What a pleasing photograph.
That you could get the stretched wings and the feet in, is amazing!
    Well done.
Maybe I would remove the white pixel on the beak.

This rocks Gail. Has to be my favorite Piping Plover shot I’ve seen. It’s just perfect. And funny enough I like the pebbles and stuff because reality is that shorebirds live in and prefer this habitat as opposed to the “ideal” claean habitat so prevelant in shorebird photography. Time well spent Gail.

    Question for Isaac,

If you get a shorebird on a perfect patch of wave-washed sand do you add some pebbles and shells to make it look more realistic?

Of course I don’t add pebbles. But that doesn’t make this shot any less great to me. It’s refreshing to see something other than the typical “perfect” type shot. Especially since this was taken on a rocky beach and not on a typical sandy beach that the vast majority of Piping Plover images are taken on.

How sweet is this! Amazing that you were able to get full-vertical, judging the height of the wing stretch to perfection! Everything is spot-on; the light, exposure, head turn, detail. And I like the pebbles. Maybe Artie has something here; I'll think about adding pebbles if I ever find a clean stretch of sand beach. I might have been tempted to clean out a few specks in the eye, but since this is contest-worthy, don't touch a thing!

That is good to know; just checking. I am fine with the stones in this image but for the one that I mentioned that merges with the foot.

Great frame. Those are some wings for sure. Love the vertical comp. Details look good all around. Low angle here is killer.

Oh boy, that is a tough one to beat as far as shorebird wing stretches go! You even got a perfect subtle head turn. You could clean up that eye any number of ways not involving the clone tool - but I get what you meant by your comment

This is a winner, Gail! Exposure and pose are great. Scattered pebbles are cool. Fun to see the feathers willing in on the underwing.

Way to get out there Gail!! This looks great and I really like the incoming feathers under the wing. Details and exposure look perfect too. The only thing I would change is to clean up the extra stuff in the eye and only keep the one prominent catchlight. Well done Gail
