Default Loonapaloosa #3- Better Eye Contact - Common Loon

Northern Michigan common loon, same bird as last post. Several folks were bothered by the eye contact on my last post. It was a concern for me as well, but I thought the calling pose was so unique that it still worked. So, I present this one showing a bit more eye contact Same equipment issues as before, so hand held from the bottom of my little boat, Loonie Too.

    D4 600VR 1/2500s f/4 ISO 320

Post: Selective sharpening, minor crop for comp. Color Efex for tonal contrast and white neutralizer. Cleaned up a double sun highlight reflection off the water.

Under normal circumstances would have gone for a smaller f/stop to increase DOF, had lots of ISO to play with, but was struggling just to hold onto the rig and more or less keep the bird framed.

    Advice and comments always appreciated.

    Cheers

The eye contact, low angle, and great exposure make this one Randy!

Randy, you're killing me with these Loon shots. It's our long weekend next week and will have to make that 2hr trip up north in early morning to see if they are back.

For me it's the eye contact and low angle that sets it apart from your previous post.

Shooting angle, exposure, and bg are gorgeous. He was peeking at you.

I really enjoyedyour previous "different" loon shot. This one is really nice too. Love the exposure. You have managed to capture the colors so well.

    Hi Randy,
    I really like this one.
I like the composition and the pose and the low POV.
    Excellent exposure and DOF.
My favorite part is the color of the water with the blues and greens.
    Definitely a keeper,
    Gail

Thanks everyone. In looking at this image further, I think it could go a bit brighter. I tend to like the darker images as that is often what the scenes are like when I am shooting, but I present this slight tweak with the middle of the curve pulled up a bit for our consideration.

Appreciate your thoughts re: exposure preference

    Cheers

A sweet, intimate image. I personally prefer the moodiness of the first one. (the darker v).

I think both are excellent, I marginally prefer the brighter image. I never tire of looking at these beautiful images.

    Hi Randy,
I slightly favor the darker one,
