I am getting some nice BIF practice and I think I am finally getting the hang of shooting BIF with manual settings.

Very very nice, Dan. My favorite of your series thus far. The pose, expo, bg, all excellent. Love it. Keep them coming.
Very nice shot. I really like the flight angle and wing position. Great control on the whites.
Well done.
I may tone down some of the bright spots in the BG, otherwise nice capture. The diagonal in the frame is perfect. Tough not use the manual setting once you get use to them...TFS
Hi Dan - I really like the comp and the view of the wing. Looks like you're really getting the hang of it.

Rachel
The detail and pose are excellent ...Very good image Dan
Another fine flight shot Dan, plenty of detail and I like the flared wingtips.

Nice raptor and image. I like the light and focus on the bird. The BG is very complementary.

cool pose and BG. nice details. dropping the ISO to 640 or 500 would have captured just a bit more tones in the forehead whites.

I'm glad that you're finally getting the hang of manual exposure for flight. Arash brings up a good point. There's no reason that you need a shutter speed of 1/3200 to capture sharp Osprey frames. 1/2000 is more than enough, and that way you can bring down the ISO. Your sharpness is excellent in the image. I'd prefer a wing position that didn't produce such a strong shadow line on the body.

Thanks for the comments.
I don't know how to toggle and change the ISO on the fly, so I just set it for base (which is about 800 on the D800), and toggle for SS and f stop.
There must be a way to do this on the D800, perhaps setting another button. How do you guys do it with your Canons?
Thanks again, I always learn something here. I stopped using auto ISO per arash suggestions, but need to figure who to adjust and change quickly.

Hi Dan,
changing ISO while handholding is difficult. I would set it up at first given the light condition. For osprey in sunlight ISO 400 should be enough. then you can fine tune exposure by changing aperture or shutter speed (if you have room) using the main and sub command dials. you are getting there

On the Canon 1D4, I've assigned the "Set" button to ISO (C.Fn IV - 4) so I can easily tweak the iso with my thumb using the quick control dial.
I've set/changed ISO with my thumb on-the-fly for kicks - it's rarely been necessary.

With Canon the ISO selection button is under your index finger so it can be activated with the right hand when hand-holding. AFAK the ISO selection button is to the left of the finder so it cannot be activated with right hand when handholding long lenses. Unless this has changed in D800.
