This is just to share. Although some have wanted to buy it, I could not sell it due to wanting a better version, whcih I hope to get this spring or summer, right around July 15-20. Does the half bird bother YOU? I am very attached to this one. It is rare to see a loon feed the chicks much less let me so close, only 35 feet away. We stayed for 20 minutes and left them, they stayed right there.

    Canon EOS 20D, Shooting Date/Time 7/5/2006 07:23:09, Shutter Speed 1/160Sec. Av(Aperture Value) F7.1, Evaluative metering, Exposure Compensation -1, ISO 200, Lens: 100-400mm, Focal Length: 400.0 mm.

I no longer own the 20D. I use my 5D or the MK2n with the 300 2.8 or the 100-400 for this type if imageing. I was still very green when i made this one. I hope to get much better with the next opportunity. By the way, I dumped the loon image with the white streak in the water.

The half loon doesn't bother me, but the half whatever-that-is behind it does. I have come to believe that the emotional impact of an image on the view is far more important that an technically better view, but glad to see you have high goals.

How about a crop something like this?

Rather than eliminate the body as Jim did, I might try to clone out the stuff behind the adult. The body of the adult is quite beautiful, and I wouldn't want to lose that. I would also crop some off of the bottom of the frame (and perhaps a little less off of the top).

I thought this might come up. I am glad it did. T tried to clone out the half male loon behind the mom feeding the chicks. I also tried the crop Jim is suggesting. I also cropped it to a pano style. It was a hard clone to make look normal. The intimate crop was appealing but I felt too close. The pano crop was a nice feel but I really liked the fuller frame.

This one really is very difficult for me to accept different other than as it is. And quite frankly I just don't know why. Thats why I wont sell it and want a better in camera image from the get go. I want a whole loon with both or just one baby feeding.

As for this image, I have tried all kinds of blow ups, crops and comps. Perhaps its my Photoshop skills. I am using version 6 for reference. Please continue to give comments and suggestions. Thanks.

    Nice capture Grady,
Love the action here, agree with doug about cloning out the distraction instead of cropping...:D

Here's a quick edit along the lines of what I was suggesting.
