I was finally able to get out to try the 5DIII. The first couple days I was not too happy with the sharpness of BIF's so changed my settings a bit. Yesterday was dark and overcast so tried 3200ISO. It is certainly offers some options for our cloudy days.

The hawk was centered and I cropped down to a bit of a pano.

Head and eyes good and sharp. Like the pano but wish for the entire wing to be seen.

Wow, apart from the missing wingtips this is a fabulous image, the eyes look bright and glassy and just enough hint of movement/motion blur to add a bit more life to the image. Sadly most times I've tried for a shot like this all I get is the other end of the bird.

Since the wings are clipped anyway, I might crop it down some more, but at 3200 you may not get away with that.
The IQ looks very good at that iso. I like the FG grass a lot.

I agree with what's already been said...really do wish for those wingtips...I would follow Artie's advice (from ABP II, I think) on this one and try a tighter crop...i.e. clip the wings so that it's obvious that it was intended. Otherwise a great photo, good sharpness where it matters, great background and well exposed.

Agree with all that has been said.
I really like the direct, full frontal gaze. The image makes me feel like I have to duck to get out of the way!

Hi Dave, great capture here, and I like your comp. The head is tack sharp, good eye contact, and what a pity about the wing tips. Killer BG too.

I'm OK with the missing wingtips here...although it would have been great to see them all the way to the end plus some room I find that they look properly cut rather than clipped to me and the comp looks great and balanced. Awesome head-on image, great background and I love the grasses along the bottom. Two thumbs up from me.

Thanks everyone. I do have frames with the wingtips and will post one a bit later. Since this was full frame I was curious if the IQ would be commented on. I guess it stands up at least for web posting.
