I am curious as to what folks have to say about this image of a Common Potoo made on a boat in Caroni Swamp on my recent fam (familiarization) tour of Trinidad and Tobago. There were about 15 folks on the boat including eight other photographers including Denise Ippolito.

Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/25 sec. at f.5.6. The shutter speed is not a typo.

Don't be shy; all honest comments are welcome.

To see four more images from that morning see Early Morning Caroni Swamp Adventure in Trinidad here.

Artie, I am liking this one because it shows the camouflage aspect. Eye visible is also very nice. For that SS, sharpness is excellent. Very interesting shot.

Thanks KD. How Lester spotted this bird is a complete mystery to me. It was well back in the woods and he had to maneuver the boat under some big branches to get line of sight to the bird....

    Hi Artie,
I appreciate that it is a great "find" and agree that the image shows off how well he is camouflaged.Your prowess in getting a tack sharp image at 1/25 sec is awesome but...
I want to see his/her face and find the angle a bit steep. Did you get any with more of the face showing?

Gail said what I was thinking before I could say it. Great skill with a big lens at 1/25th. Interesting to see , but without a face it's hard to view. Even if the eye were a bit more visable , that might help.

Excellent job spotting this well camouflaged bird and an equally great job with the execution.
I love the comp and the details.

Any shot of a Potoo is a winner in my book. Glad the eye is showing, and great work to get him at that SS. But in a perfect world a better angle on the bird, both horizontally and vertically, would have been wished for.

Interesting, much like what we call a Tawny Frogmouth over here. impressed by the camera data ! I think some kind of view of the face would be a little better....someone needs to tell the bird to co operate hahaha

Lots of sharp detail at that SS and good for you. Off a boat as well. It must have been quite a find. Comments already made about a bit more eye. I like the criss crossy bg. It seems to match the bark and lines on the bird.

Definitely a cool bird, and well exposed, amazingly sharp given the techs, cool complementary BG, but without a face it lacks a connection for me...that one eye peeking over the shoulder is not quite enough.

    Hi Artie

Ironically I would get that branch darker to the same tone as the bird so the bird gets lost; it stands out too well! Personally I like it, you have captured so well what you saw!

Hard to spot indeed, I have seen them but no shots of common potoo. I once came across a perched Great Potoo 5 m away in full view in the jungle BEFORE I did bird photography lol

Very nine picture, nice details and perch.
With showing the huge eye of this species, it would have been a fantastic picture.

Thanks all. Agree on all counts. Of the 30 images that I created this one showed the most eye.... The bird simply never turned around. The boatman did a great job of finding an open view of the bird and stabilizing the boat. And for the most part the boys and girls stayed very still. I let lots of folks use the set-up but I am not sure that any made anything sharp even at ISO 1600.... It takes lots of practice to get sharp stuff at slow shutter speeds with big glass. In fact, if the boat shifted/drifted even a little bit most folks could not find the bird in the viewfinder.
