Default Common Loon - Intimate portrait

Hi all, I haven't posted in a long while, but have been browsing the forums when I've got a few free moments. This loon came rather too close for my lens and converter, but I wasn't about to stop and miss any close-ups. Here is an intimate portrait showing some fine details. I really like the water droplets on her face, the soft lighting, and the swirly green background.

Comments and critiques very much appreciated! Thanks for looking!

Very nice colours and fine details, love the droplets. A bit tight in the frame but you could add canvas to cure it.

Giant bird !..agree regarding the size in frame, the4 fine droplets are a nice touch in this one and maybe a tad brightness tweak would lift this a bit more as I feel it looks a little flat in tones.

Awesome details, exposure, low angle. Having it so large in the frame would work better if cropped even more at right instead of having the bird simply clipped at the edge IMO.

Thank-you all very much for your comments. I agree that it's definitely tight in the frame, just hadn't decided if this worked, or if a different crop might be better. I guess it is tight enough that I could go for more of a head and neck portrait and loose some of the body on the right as Daniel has suggested. I like it enough that I will try some cropping to see if that makes an improvement. Adding realistic looking canvas would be more work than it's worth in this case, because I am lucky enough to have many other shots to choose from and lots of opportunities to get more. I am hoping for chicks with parents in the next week or so...

    Cheers!

I am going to go against the majority here and say that I love the closeup view. I would crop more off the right to emphasize the beautiful head and water droplets. Killer BG,

    Beautiful head image.
Just wonder whether it would be worth trying sharpening breast area just a smidgin?

Thank-you for your comments Gail and Ian! Ian, I did run several rounds of selective sharpening of the in focus parts of the bird, including the breast...I'm not sure I would gain any extra from another round.

    Cheers!
