Taken this past April in Florida with a photography friend of mine that lives down there. Had a blast photographing these guys as well as other species. Sadly, I missed the baby Burrowing Owls by a matter of 3 days! Was still happy with what I came home with though. Interesting note how the one pupil is more dilated then the other. Believe this is because the that side was partial shaded from the sun. Thanks for looking and C & C always welcome.

    7d, manual, 1/250sec @ f/8, 500mm f/4L, ISO 200, fill flash used, taken at 7:13PM.

A great character and nice portrait. I too have seen the odd looking pupils in a similar species ( Little Owl ) that we have in the UK.
I like the strong eye contact and curious look. The non competing background helps as well.

Excellent image Josh! I like the pose, details, sharpness and BG. Getting the feet visible isn't always possible. Look forward to more from your trip.

The clear view of the feet and the BG and good vertical comp make this a really nice shot.

    Josh:

He does look very alert, on guard. Good use of fill flash, sharp, well exposed. I might move him just slightly to the right in the frame, let the rocks help balance him out a bit.

Humans have a consensual pupillary response, light hitting either eye causes the opposite eye to also constrict. That isn't true in birds, so you often see asymmetrical pupils based on different ambient lighting on each eye. Does give some unusual looking pupils at times!

    Cheers

Hi Josh, good eye contact, and I like the comp to suit the pose. Your low angle works well to frame him against the distant OOF BG.

Very nice Josh, really good angle to get the bokeh you got with these guys.
    Nice job.

Excellent eye contact, light and bg. A look at the feet is cherry on top. Love it.

Nice, and I love the comp as is. Great techs and use of flash. I might be tempted to darken the rocks a tad as well as two spots in the BG: one above the head and one touching the owl's wing to our right.

Better luck next time for the babies!!
