I now realize that I could have lowered the shutter speed and gained more DOF

    Bob,

I like the pic and the DoF is fine in my book - I like to shoot wide open with birds. The frame is well controlled, nice habitat in LRHC and the background complements the subject well. You did well to control the whites and the wing detail looks good. The opportunity would be to evict the twig on the bottom edge and the frame is a bit tight but let's see what others say. I like the launch pose and flight action - well done - keep em coming.

Hi Bob, this looks really good to me. Agree with Jeff's comments - I would give the bird more space in the frame. Whites look great and I think you made very good use of the DOF. You are correct in your statement regarding the shutter speed. Critical focus was on the feet and tail, but the head is just sharp enough to make the eye forgive the difference. I like this one - snowies are maybe my favorite birds. This is a snowy egret, not a great. They are confusing, but you can think about this memory aid "the snowy has his snow boots on". The yellow feet are sometimes the best indicator. The great egret has black feet and a yellow bill, while the snowy is just the opposite.

    Hi Bob,
I'm new here, and far from being a specialist, but I just wanted to say that this is a very nice picture. Very animated and sharp.
I also think that cloning out the bottom branch (but leaving the one on the right) would be both easy to do and make the picture even nicer - less distraction from the green.
Also, I might lighten the deeper blues of the sky a bit (maybe with dodge on PS), I think the beauty of the bird doesn't stand out as much as it could with the slightly gloomy looking sky around it.
That being said, I'd be completely thrilled, indeed proud of myself, if I had been able to take such a good shot :-)

Agree with comments already posted....this is a nice point of view and detail is good. I would agree with adding space on top.

I like this and agree with the comments above. The whites are not blown but there are lots of pixels close. It would be easy to tone down just the highlights in Adobe Camera Raw or whatever processing software you use. I'll add that in an ideal world, it would have been better of the bird had been angled towards you rather than away.
