Can I use a Canon 2X TC III with the older Canon 70-200L series I lens

I am new to photographing BIF and plan to use my first generation 70-200mm F2.8L zoom lens with a 2X TC on my Canon 7D. My question is do I have to buy the older 2X TC or can I use the new 2X TC III with my current set up ? Preston
