Default He is one crazy coot, I guess

    Hello folks
Here is a look at a coot with whom I recently spent some time. Taken with the Canon 7D and 70-300L at 269mm. iso400, 1/800, f8. You're looking at roughly 75% of the original capture. Also, I cloned out a few muddy bits in the water. Does this beloved bird have a magenta cast? Please do tell, as your monitors are likely to be crispier than mine. Moving on to the pious world of composition now: I deplore assumptions but this composition warrants an assumption, and here it is: many of you will take issue with the centred-in-frame bird? Which is to say: it is often unappealing to present one's subject dead-center in frame. So say the photogs of the world. Oh boy! I love to read your comments and ideas and suggestions, which are so often helpful and revealing and educational and frisky! Many thanks for your consideration...

great colors, fun pose, good job on the blacks and whites (keeping detail in both). I would crop in order to take the bird out of the middle of the frame. I would keep the head in the reflection and crop mostly from the top and left I'd say. Beautiful image.

Thanks folks, very much. Will see what I can do about the composition. And sheesh bingo, the bill IS a tad bit hot. Just a little bit, but hot bills are a NO-NO! I wholeheartedly agree!

Hi Jack, I couldnt resist. Here is my repost with how I feel the comp should be. I aslo boosted the saturation on the BG, ran a touch of NR on it as well, and added a touch of sharpness to the little fellow too. Of course, you can do better with your original.

No Stuart, you're quite right....a composition like that is highly appealing, and I intend to rework the original. As always, your input is highly appreciated by y.t., and I do like the added saturation to the background; huzzah!

Thanks Daniel...I wish he'd completely blocked the rock with his flailing body, but no such luck...it's a terrific pond that I visit and revisit...I've probably been to this spot over 500 times but that coot was there only once!
