    Default I'm going down!

With terrible lighting conditions for BIF work, I pulled off this graphic silhouette of two pelicans. Made at the tip of the harbor breakwater in Santa Barbara, CA. Canon 1DsIII, 500mm + 1.2x.

Nice mood in this shot. I wish the two birds were separated completely but nice nonetheless.

Sorry. I could not resist... Un-merged the birds with ROT's (Robert O'Toole's) great Quick Masking stuff (APTATS) and balckened the SILHs.

Art, that's exactly what I really wanted to do, but wasn't sure how that would be accepted here. I'll probably do it for the print.

As far as I am concerned, the photographer is the artist. As long as you let folks know what you are doing, I am fine with it. Others might see you as a cheating criminal, but that is about them... I see myself as using modern technology to produce the best image. If others wish to call the end result a photo illustration, I am fine with that too. I try to keep the final image true to the natural history of the moment. Some might argue that I have not done that here; I would respond by saying that this is exaclty what it would have looked like had you pushed the shutter button 1/2 second later.

The only trouble with tweaking one image is that pretty soon, you'll find yourself correcting ALL of your best images (to make them even better) and then, by the time contest season rolls around (BBC, Nature's Best, etc.), you'll have a hard time finding an image that still fits within their very limited rules. C'est la vie. . .
