Default Grist Mills, Smoky Mountain NP

Back from the Smoky's, and still drying out from a wet but great visit. This image was taken between rain storms., with the waterway overflow spill wide open. Grist Mills is a fascinating glimpse into the history of the area. Park millers still produce cornmeal in the three-story building as they tell stories of old-time mills and millers. The diagonal wood column is a rustic ladder for access to the waterway platform.

I went for hyper detail and texture on this scene to highlight the age and feel of the place. Slight layer of Topaz - SMP, and Clean - Curly Smooth. Tonal contrast for detail, crop from original to eliminate a dull grey sky. Added a bit of grunge for the final layer.

Hope you like it...........whoops, just noticed a bit moire in the waterfall..will correct.

Wonderful composition, Jay. Thanks for sharing the historical perspective of the mill and the waterway. Your processing is just fantastic! I think going for hyper detail certainly paid-off as is the grunge effect. Excellent work!

I like the grunge, too. Gives more emphasis to the old. Smokey Mtns ----one of my favorite places. Thanks for sharing

Jay, it's good to hear that you're back...I may give you a call later...and I can't wait to see more of your work. I really like the processing on this one...creative use of bringing out details and textures...if it were mine I might darken the greens just a bit...strong composition, particularly the inclusion of the logs on the LHS. Well done!

Thanks for the comments. I'm not to happy with the way the processing created artifacts and such. The weeds and grasses are not the way I wanted, so I may start over on this one.

This turned out great and I'd be interested to see how you might change it. I really like how the bright greens contrast with all the grays. I also like how the indistinct lines of the vegetation play against the straight lines of the logs and house siding.

Jay, great composition and I like the grunge look. I can't figure out what the dark tall rectangular shape is behind the logs (on the left side of the house)? I think you could crop just a tad from the bottom (eliminating the rusty patch in front of the grass). I'll be looking forward to a repost and some more Smokey Mountain images. I remember yours from your last trip and they were beautiful

That rectangular shape is a wall that leads from the waterway to inside the mill..........thanks for the feedback.

Very nice Jay! I visited that grist mill 3 yrs ago. I didn't get that particular shot though, and it's an interesting POV! BTW, we just got back from the Smokies Wednesday but didn't tour the mill this time. We stayed in Townsend and went to the Cove 3 times, to Cataloochee Valley (a magical place!) and to Roaring Forks. I am working on the photos and will post one soon and also in the Landscape forum which I have plenty of candidates for! We were there for 7 days along with 3 other photographers in our "gang". One lives in Townsend.

Jay, I like this a lot. The processing is well done and I think the composition is appealing. The waterfall looks like it pops off the page! I might add a slight curve adjustment to the foliage. I don't see the artifacts you mentioned. Nice work!

Denise, Thank you. The artifacts are in the top of the waterfall where a moire pattern was introduced during compression for posting, I'm guessing. It's not a biggie. The foliage needs something......i'll try a curves adjustment, as you suggested.
