I actually used NIK Silver Efex on this one, and messed with the blend modes on the duplicate layer, and settled on one which allowed some color back, then brought some of the color back into the background. Also used Topaz Adjust and NIK Color Efex to bring out textures and tones. I'm really happy about this one, but feel really bad about the bird. He was actually pretty sick.

Sick gull notwithstanding, this is a very nice image. I like the colors (the blue is nice with the browns), and the pattern in the background echoes that in the gull very well. It's great when the subject and background work so well together.

Hi Cynthia.....You did a good job on the exposure and bg was handled very well....nice sharpness in the eye and beak. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Cynthia, this is nice base image and I really like the look on the gull's face. You can sense that there is something going wrong with him. The background mirrors the feathers and is a nice part of the image. Nice work

Cynthia, the processing done on this is striking; a rich blend of sharpness and texture, giving a colored-pencil or colored lithograph effect over a beautiful blend of colors..the eye makes the picture. Nicely done!

Cynthia, Beautiful processing and capture. Nice job with the details and the pose. I too feel sorry for the poor bird.

Sometimes I will see a sick bird, and feel inclined to photograph them. It's not their deformity that strikes me, but their will to survive despite their circumstances. This guy was oozing such strength and determination, despite his obvious deformity. I felt so bad for him, but yet, so inspired to capture his essence. Thanks for the comments, folks.
